Glaucoma

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes damage to the optic nerve. Fluid builds up in the eye, and it is elevated pressure that damages the nerve. There are two primary types of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Injuries to the eyes are a significant cause of glaucoma in people who might otherwise not be prone to the disease.

Is glaucoma hereditary?

The most common type of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, tends to run in families. If other family members have this disease, it is time to make sure you receive an annual comprehensive eye exam. The possibility of having glaucoma rises by 4 to 9 times if a close relative has the disease.

Will I go blind with glaucoma?

If glaucoma goes untreated, it can eventually cause blindness. Patients with glaucoma often suffer some form of vision loss. That's why it's essential to have your eyes tested regularly for proper care. Eye care cannot help vision return, but we can manage your condition from getting any worse.

Can glaucoma be cured?

Glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled in most cases when caught early on. Open-angle glaucoma is a chronic condition and will need to be treated for life.

Who is at risk of glaucoma?

No one is safe from glaucoma. However, if you are over 60, your risk level for developing glaucoma is significantly higher. Patients with a history of extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness are at risk of developing glaucoma.  If you are suffering from a previous eye injury, heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, you are more at risk of glaucoma.

Can I prevent glaucoma?

You can't prevent glaucoma, but you can prevent sight loss and blindness with regular comprehensive eye exams. If you suspect you have glaucoma, schedule an appointment with our team right away for a thorough analysis.
